Using the 10clues of DL - How I see MD

Postby PauloMota » 10 Aug 2012

Ok here we go. Straight to the point.

1 - Pay particular attention to the beginning of the film: At least two clues are revealed before the credits

- Jitterbug- Yes it's the foundation of Diane's dream. Betty has the support of her family(the old people) and wins the competition and with all she can become and actress -> this is what she really WANTS in Life.
- Yes it's a dream. It's diane's dream.

=> From here I can tell that the old people aren't really supportive of what she wanted. Maybe she escaped from home and went to LA alone, like many many people that want to belong.

2 - Notice appearances of the red lampshade

- For me this is the clue that Camilla isn't DEAD nor Diane wanted Camilla dead. Where did this idea came from ? that Camilla is dead ? She is not.
- The red lamshade shows (in the first 20 ou 30m of the film) that Mr.Roque contacts a guy and that guy contacts the guy that gives the blue key to Diane. So "this is the girl" the GIRL that Diane PAYED to be on the FILM!!! Why ? Because she LOVES HER and wants her to have everything. this is an illusion though. In reality Diane really paid for Camilla to be kidnapped (more ahead).
- Where does this money come from ? Well Diane worked at a coffee shop to support herself and was a prostitute/street whore - The proof is in the coffee cups that belong to Winkies and that are found in Diane's Apartment, and she see's the waitress in both her dreams and illusions of reality.

Diane is very sick! She's in trouble, she is living something that isn't true. Dreaming or not.

This is all a tricky thing because. In reality she didn't payed anything. That's what she wanted to happen. There is no blue key. There was no meeting at the coffee shop, or maybe there was but to hire the kidnapper.

Diane is a BUM, she failed! She is living in the street. She appears in the DREAM that Rita has while escaping Aunt Ruth in the beginning. You see ? It's a premonition, that's the mistery behid WINKIES.

Also the lampshade may also mean that Black Haired CAmilla isn't real at all! She is a way that Diane has to deal with the presence of the BLONDE Camilla. The one that made it!

3- Can you hear the title of the film that Adam Kesher is auditioning actresses for? Is it mentioned again?

Ok! Diane wanted to star in the "Sylvia North Story". She Didn't! This started the failure period in her life. This is where she fell pretty hard. She became in love with this woman that used HER, she USED HER (that's the main purpose of the cowboy. To USE people, to make things go his own WAY). She gave her some parts but it didn't worked out because Diane probably wasn't good enough or didn't sell out by fucking producers or directors because she is a lesbian. A curse to save and be honest in your own kind of LOVE.

This is why Betty runs away from the studio. She can't FACE that blond Camilla. It's unbearable to her, to remember. IN fact she wants her to get the PART your see ? She was dreaming so high that she would do a film with ADAM and stealing Camilla's part....she avoided that.

4 - An accident is a terrible event … Notice the location of the accident
The accident WAS REAL, but SHE DIDN'T Die. there's no clue what so EVER that Camilla died. Camilla (the blond one) is MISSING! This is a curve ball, a very good one so people in general can give and mix the presence of the black haired camilla in both reality distortions of Diane's view of the world (the dream world and the world her sick mind his giving her)

Camilla was kidnapped. Because of diane's jealousy, Camilla is going to marry Adam.

5 - Who gives a key, and why?
The guy give the key because there's where Camilla WILL BE, maybe it's even near the club silencio, where THE REAL LOVE, THE SICK LOVE that Diane feels is.

6- Notice the robe, the ashtray, the coffee cup

Ok. The robe is not about the ones that appear in the dream. It's the robe Diane is using when she awakes from her DREAM. Notice that NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS, she is just masturbating in the couch seeing reality fade away once more. This is a BIG clue that Lynch is giving.

The ashtray (the one with a keyboard I think) is just a reference in time, when they moved. Meaning Camilla was living with Diane, and used Diane to have pleasure but it ended because of Adam, the guy she's fucking to get to the TOP.

7 - What is felt, realised and gathered at the club Silencio?

Felt and realised. All is an illusion. Diane is very sad and depressed, she loves Camilla, she wants her.
Gathered - The box where Camilla is, this hope box. This world made of hope.

8 - Did talent alone help Camilla?

No. Camilla fucked to get to the top. She knew the rules and played them. Diane didn't. Diane fell in love. Diane loves Camilla, she loves her so much that in her DREAM world where fucking doesn't help getting to stardom, she buys her the ROLE.

9 - Note the occurrences surrounding the man behind 'Winkies'
I explained this before already. Diane is the 'Man behind Winkies', Diane is the BUM.

10 - Where is Aunt Ruth?
In diane's head. Aunt Ruth isn't real. She appears on the dream world and on the real world because Diane had to mad her up. Her parents didn't help her. They Didn't gave her HOPE TO DREAM.

After reading all this I can say the following:

The Cowboy is clearly a reference to American Cinema, John Wayne, the power of the Hollywood system and how everything really WORKS. This is why he appears after the REAL BLOND camilla.

In fact the Cowboy is a manifestation of the real personality of Camilla in Diane's DREAM. This is why the Cowboy enters the room and talks to the corpse: Time to wake UP. This is kind of sick, but this is Camilla's saying to Diane, come to my party. Lynch was really sick here, sick joke!

Yes Camilla is BLOND even in the DREAM Rita is BLOND most of the time.

The BUM is really Diane, in fact david SAYS that in the final scene. The bum appears above Diane's dead body. Then we see the REAL dream of Being A STAR and Everything.

I think Diane made it all up because she failed to enter the Sylvia North Story. Maybe Rita and Betty were just some costumers at WINKIES.
The real DIANE is not Naomi Watts its The WAITRESS at WINKIES, She is a WHORE. The one that appears to have arm bruised when talking to the guy that give the blue key to Naomi's Diane.
Like I said this is all proved because of the coffee cups.

Clearly the OLD Couple coming out of the box is because DIANE remembers the DREAM RITA HAD (INSIDE HER DREAM) and that BUM HIS REALLY HER, she created the OLD FOLKS to give HER HOPE. HOPE come's back to HAUNT her. She can't BARE to live with this reality, she kills her self!

The only proof that Maybe CAmilla wasn't Kidnapped and was MURDERED is because of the THE DEAD BODY in Diane's dream. She can't dream that she killed herself....it was too wierd, even for David Lynch.

Maybe the Dead Body's is hidden in Diane's real apartment because, maybe that is where to body of camilla is. 3 weeks and she is gone. But if Camilla is alive or not...is not really a big DEAL. I just putted out of the equation because I knew she was DEAD in the END (Diane). But now I see that she can be alive or DEAD.
===============

Please fell free to question my sanity here :) but please use cinematic arguments. In this site I see a lot of criativity but towards things that aren't there, like who gives the key and Coco is the one that gives the key. David painted a key blue so he can say "The KEy" and you guys all know which one.

Thank you for this wonderful site. It really helped get somethings more clear, you guys saved me a lot of work. The whole movie is dissected here.

To use strictly cinematic info, I have to point out that Betty and Adam are staring at each other for about 4 seconds before she says she has to go and help out a friend. She's not locking eyes with blond camilla and getting angry, she's locking eyes with Adam, and what I can never figure out is that look of regret on his face.

But it touches on one of the big mysteries of MULHOLLAND DRIVE. Why does Betty run away from the audition of her dreams? If I go with my gut.... well,... let me start off by saying, the answer I eventually landed on (after landing on my Grand Unifying Theory of MULHOLLAND DRIVE) is NOT the first impression I had when I saw the movie the first couple times.

I honestly believed that Betty is such a perfect manifestation of innocence that her ambition is, quite simply, taking a back seat to her impulse to..... help people. She made a promise to a friend and keeps it. That's Betty.

My answer to this question has changed since then, but wanted to toss that out there. I think it's valid to believe that Betty's ambition takes a back seat to her goodness.

I've never taken a stab at the 10 clues because there's multiple answers to each, and I always figured they were just there to get a viewer who might not be inclined to think about a movie the way us obsessed half crazed nuts do to think about the movie like an obsessed half crazed nut.

and all of that would have been elaborated on more if MD were picked up as a series (the whole Adam/Betty thing).

Maybe you are right. This is now open for each own's perception. I still think that Diane wanted to be good, so this is Betty. Maybe she was good before just didn't survived the life she was having. Maybe she's just staring at Adam because she felt that wasn't right, it was Bob not Adam (the director of the Sylvia North Story). The way Adam looks at her is just her recollecting that he knew her in real life.

Nevertheless it's an amazing scene. Lynch found gold there no doubt!
