I mentioned this years ago but it deserves another mention.

David Foster Wallace wrote about Lynch in his book A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again

The chapter is titled: David Lynch Keeps His Head and documents Wallace's on-site visit during the production of Lost Highway.

I heartily recommend this book for two reasons. One, the late Wallace is certainly one of the great writers of our generation and the book is a darn good read. Two, his insights on Lynch are so perceptive, witty and interesting it's absolutely worth a read for those that are interested in Lynch.

I had no idea who David Foster Wallace was before reading the Lynch chapter. I absolutely stopped reading to ask myself the question, who is this guy? The answer is a rare talent whose flame blew out far to early in life.

I've read a few books on Lynch, but most of them follow the same format of brief bio along with explanation/trivia/information about the making of his films. Picked up a few bits of information from Weirdsville USA: Obsessive Universe of David Lynch such as discovering the Club Silencio scenes in MD were filmed at the same time as the pilot. Most don't seem to have an awful lot of access to him, so not much direct insight or thoughts from the man himself, but Lynch on Lynch is the exception and is a series of long transcribed interviews with Chris Rodley. Some good stuff in there, but as with all things Lynch, don't expect too much deep explanation.

I recently was reading from my college library "Beautiful Dark" about David Lynch's films. The book focuses mostly on analyzing Lynch's films all the way from his short films to Inland Empire. It was a very great read to get a new perspective on each of Lynch's materials.

I agree, "Beautiful Dark" is a great book on Lynch. The author is an art curator who has known Lynch and a lot of his family and friends, and it follows Lynch through pretty much all the film work he has done, and it seems like he talked to Lynch a lot over the whole of his career. Sort of a biography and an exploration of his films all in one.
