I don't think Ed lives there. I think he's just staking out the scene with his telescope.

Yes, he has those resources. He's Ed .. Resources, keys, telescopes, he might not like his digs but yes, he's got the resources.

Ok here is the added info but this requires a leap on the part of someone reading this... But if you look at the Ed's office scene you will see the shadow of a lampshade on the middle blind pulled down... This is a lighting impossibility of course as there is only the sunlight outside his window... What this makes me think is that Ed's office exists inside the soul or lamp of Diane. (Wtf???, just follow me, ok, it can't hurt)

Right before the old couple sneaks in to Diane's apartment, Diane blinks/winks twice. So Dan says there's a man in back of this place, behind Winkies.

Again situating something in Diane's brain directly behind her winks. And that thing is Ed.

And again, therefore, it's Ed behind the winkies diner too. It all fits. Lynch is a genius!

Following this line then, if Ed is some part of Diane then it's a part that she dreams is killed by the very hit man SHE hired.

So maybe Ed is her innocence or soul or whatever - the part that she destroyed when she chose the path of murder. And that's why Joe kills Ed in the dream.

I always read the bum as the part of Diane, created by her bad experiences, that ordered the hit, "the one that's doing it". But maybe the bum is the ruined, fallen doppelganger of Ed.

Problem is Ed comes across as a bit of a callous sleaze-ball, and not at all how I envisgae a young girls innocent soul!
