Just noting for the record there is a diner waitress.... roughly the same age as Irene in MD, maybe a little younger but certainly oldish, and her name is ... Irene.

She smokes, but she doesn't do drugs.

She calls Agent Stanley a toehead.

She has an opinion about how Theresa Banks was killed. She thinks it was some kind of freak accident.

Oh and she's very emphatic to let them know there are no specials.

I was re-watching FWWM a couple of weeks ago, and noted that too...

I also noticed this the last time I watched FWWM. It's interesting, because it is hard to ascertain how Lynch works these things together. I would assume that he started by referencing Irene's relationship to Teresa Banks as a more realistic depiction of Diane's world. Then I suppose the whole Erinyes thing would have been serendipitous, but we can only speculate about Lynch's working methods.

I don't mean that the Erinyes thing wasn't deliberate. I think it's clear that the old couple function this way in the closing moments. I expect that the name Irene originally came from FWWM, before Lynch made the Erinyes connection.
