Twins, doppelgangers, mirrors, opposites etc

Postby blu » 26 Mar 2011

This may just end up being a little personal thread where I collect specimens but feel free to join me.

David Lynch loves duality.

He loves twins.

He loves characters played by 2 actors. He loves hidden secret twin characters played by the same person. He loves twins played by twins. He loves actors to play two characters. And so on and so on.

I wanna collect them. So I'll add to this post when I find the time to drag DVDs off my shelf and when inspiration strikes me. I would like others to contribute though, because I know how deep this rabbit hole goes and I know that after a little while this thread will make people sit up and take notice.

A rare pair, from On The Air ... the Hurry Up Twins

I am coming along - here's Double Ed (right) from Blue Velvet

For those interested in this topic, I recommend Buñuel's "That Obscure Object of Desire". Try not to read up stuff before watching ;-)

And of course Maddy (short for Madeleine) is the dark haired double for blonde Laura much as Judy is the dark-haired double for blonde Madeleine in Vertigo, the film being referenced by Lynch.

I have taken a close look at the brunette twins arriving at the airport behind Betty. I believe they exit the airport together. You can see directly behind Irenes head the very top of the second brunette, it has the same shape as the one who is clearly visible.

Can we actually draw a link to the twins in 3 Women?

Gosh I never thought about that.

Or even these two ...

I wonder if his twin motif came from films, or they're just an avatar for this idea of duality that runs much deeper.

In the press kit for David Byrne's TRUE STORIES, they advertise that David Byrne included over 50 sets of twins in his film. The challenge is to find them all!

Also, old story goes they're both Davids with last names that correspond to very gruesome ways to kill someone.

CREEEEEPY!
