Matt here, pretty sure all I said is I don't understand it and I don't like it. I should be entitled to that opinion just as you are entitled to yours. I'm not begrudging you for liking it.

We had 7 people in on the discussion and none of us could make sense of the film. Even Jake, who loves the film couldn't come up with why he enjoys it beyond, "It's David Lynch". That's not an invalid reason, but for me I need a bit more.

Could you please enlighten me on what the story of the film is?

I requested on our facebook group for fans of the film to come forward with their ideas before we did our review, it really would have helped get a different perspective since we were so confused. However, it seems instead they all waited until after we had done it so they could bad mouth us for not understanding it.

Also, our original plan wasn't to review all of Lynch's films. Our listeners requested we do it once we had finished reviewing Peaks.

I can understand getting mad at us if we tore Twin Peaks apart, since it's the main topic of our show. However, the Lynch films are something extra and I really don't think it's realistic to expect us to like them all. We're Twin Peaks fans first, Lynch fans second.

So far we've really liked Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart, weren't so into Mulholland Dr. and we really disliked Inland Empire.

Yes I agree that it's pretty confusing! That's why I haven't reviewed it.

If you want to find out more you could try here or even here. You still have Eraserhead to look forward to. Lots of writing about that to get you in the mood. Look.

I personally agree that the podcast team do come across as philistines when reviewing IE. However, it's a very irreverent programme, and they approach their subject from an unpretentious, entertaining angle. I wouldn't take it too seriously.
Just forget you ever saw it. It's better that way.

I'll be honest here.

I'm not sure I could sit through another viewing of IE, never mind a podcast about it. Twice in the theatre and once on DVD was enough for me. Each to their own though.

Taking a bit of flak for being a Lynch nut is a hazard of the trade.

BUT, if you genuinely have an issue with something they've said personally about you, my advice would be to deal with it privately. Matt's been perfectly reasonable and respectful in his postings here and if you think that one of his pod team has been disrespectful best dealt with privately IMO.

You seem like a sound guy, kmk, don't stress it.

I finally made it through the whole podcast last night. I confess I snoozed a bit at one point and had to fast forward through some of it. An hour is just TOO LONG for this kinda a cast ;-)

I got the impression they know there's more in there and just feel a bit threatened by it. The lady doth protest too much. But fair enough - I'm sure that's how a lot of people react, so it's probably representative.

They wrote off Ulysses by James Joyce too, so Lynch is in good company. (Surely Finnegans Wake would be a closer comparison, but probably lucky those casters weren't alerted to the existance of Finnegan's Wake though, their incandescent rage might make them explode).
