A story of drug abuse?

Postby vicster111 » 28 Dec 2010

A lot of people think that the weird noise we hear right before a head hits the pillow is the sound of someone taking a bong hit or snorting a line of cocaine. I don't think so.

I do believe that this dreamer may be an alcoholic. We actually see Diane with a drink and we hear the word 'Coke' at one point before her audition. We hear many references to drinks where someone is asked if they want one. I think the dreamer/alcoholic's drink of choice is rum and coke. And the fact that rum is spanish in origin may be important where Camilla is concerned.

Does she represent rum? Is that why Betty asks Rita not to use all the Coke?

I don't know what it's like to be an addict, but I can imagine that the abuser's relationship with their 'drug' of choice is one of love and hate. We see this kind of relationship between Diane and Camilla in the final 30 minutes of the film.

To me the closest connection to "coke" would be cocain, which further supports the drug theory. Anyway, I believe this would be a good spot for us to collect evidence of drug/alcohol abuse found in the movie. Let me start with those notes in my book:

- "Don't drink all the coke" as a reference to cocain
- Cookie, as Diane's drug dealer at Park Hotel
- Herb, as a referenc to marijuana
- Laney, a drugged-out prostitude as Diane's negative/suppressed projection of herself
- Rebekah Del Rio, another drugged-out mess
- The dead woman in #17 sports a wristband/tourniquet that might point to drug abuse/OD

- The bong on the shelf in Aunt Ruth living room

It's not completely clear where rum originated other than the Spanish or Spanish speaking populations had nothing to do with it. Rum may have originated in China or India or even the Middle-East. If you're thinking of rum that first originated in the Caribbean, that happened in Barbados, which had Portuguese settlements before becoming a British colony. Nothing Spanish about it.

Bob - some interesting stuff. Cocaine may be something she uses on occasion, just as she may use marijuana on occasion. However, I do not believe that the aforementioned drugs are being abused. There's no way for anyone to do a line of cocaine and then go to sleep. Cocaine is a stimulant. A very strong one. Also, I've never heard of a marijuana addict. I considered that heroin may be the drug she's abusing, but there's no evidence whatsoever. On top of that, it is well known that heroin makes one vomit after a dose. There's no evidence of anyone vomiting either. But alcohol is a depressant, it is addictive and many types are mixed with Coke. We see Diane with a drink during the couch scene and, as I said before, we hear many references to drinks being offered. Maybe this dreamer is trying to stop the addiction to alcohol but the alcohol is always calling their name ("Would you like a drink?"). We hear it a lot during this film. Alcohol withdrawal would also explain the shaking of Betty at Club Silencio. This is one of the symptoms of withdrawal for alcoholics. And the bum fits in quite nicely, too. Most are seen as drunks.

Ctyankee - while it may be true that rum originated elsewhere, it is society's popular belief that rum comes from that beautiful, spanish-speaking country of Mexico. Maybe because that's where the best rum comes from these days.

Well, the film holds one of the most peculiar vomitting scenes ever put on screen.
