I think Lynch's masterpiece Mulholland Dr. best movie of all times.

What do you think?

There's not been a film in the last decade that has left such an impression on me. In fact I guess no film ever has. I've spent the best part of the last 10 years talking about it on some regular basis and it certainly inspired something of an on-and-off obsession in me.

Other honourable mentions from the 'noughties':

Team America (yes really)
Oldboy
Grizzly Man
Brick
Let The Right One In
+ pretty much everything Cronenberg has done

I'm probably missing stuff, but brain is not running at 100% this evening. ;-)

Further evidence as to why you shouldn't post here when you've been over-served

Which one particularly? Or all of them? Or what?

And anything from the 00s that are your highlights?

Agree on "Best of the Decade." (Or "best ever?") Other awards I would give it: Best performance by a man or woman: Naomi Watts, Best music.

Impossible to have a best ever for me. But top ten seems fair. At this level it's not really about film, it's just one of the finest pieces of 20th century art.

Other noughties honourable mentions:
Naked
Being John Malkovitch

Probably many others...

Blu - I haven't seen most of those. Cool, loads of films to check out!

I'm from Manchester in the UK, so find the character of Johnny in that film quite brilliant. Mike Leigh is a wonderful director, and Naked would be up there in my top 10 of all time maybe. Surprised to find another fan!

As for movie recommendations, I assume you have seen the long list of films working with similar themes on the main site? I posted a thread here looking for any more suggestions if people have them ...

Team America (7/10) Montage! :D
Oldboy (9/10) mind blowing
Grizzly Man (n/a)
Brick (n/a)
Let The Right One In (6/10) left me unimpressed
Naked (8/10) most rewarding when watched drunk

Blu, I was meaning to ask this. Are you actually talking like those guys in Naked, e.g. "me" instead of "my"? There was no frigging way I could watch that flick without subtitles.

My picks for last decade (besides MD of course):

Amelie
Avatar (on the big screen anyway)
Children of Men
City of God
Eternal Sunshine
Lost in Translation
Memento
Oldboy
Sideways
The Prestige
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (does 2010 still count?)

Eternal Sunshine

Momento is too rigidly structured for me. Good idea, got it, thanks. Have you watched it in chronological order? Apparently there's a magic button on the dvd but I just painstakingly wrote down the times of all the cuts and then flicked between them. Either way quite revealing.

Blu: Johnny is brilliant but can't ever get over his set up - remember he rapes that girl in the first 3 minutes. How to alienate your audience from your protagonist in one simple move!

And Blu: I haven't seen the link you mention can you repost please?

Has anyone seen Trasharella? Sounds like it deals with MD themes?

The trailer would make us believe so, indeed.

No, but I have read the screen play and rewatched the movie numerous times in order to piece things together. It's a much more rewarding endeavour. :holmes:

Check the following link. Some top stuff in here: http://mulholland-drive.net/studies/recommended.htm

And re: Johnny, I guess that's a large part of the film. Not quite sure how you're supposed to feel for him. He's not a nice individual. Not at all. But he reveals something in the people that he comes across on his odyssey. Mostly things about themselves that they don't want to know or face. He's a wonderful character. And brilliantly played by David Thewlis. Fantastic performance from him.

8-)

My accent is not that broad, no. I know people who do speak like that, but mine is a little more toned down than that you'll be pleased to hear.

Absolutely brilliant. And fantastic performances from the whole cast I'd say. Mike Leigh gets amazing and naturalistic performances from his cast. You can tell that he get's them to improvise, that they spend time workshopping the characters and that he loves the craft of acting. It's a joy to see this sort of theatre-like performance, makes such a change from the wooden cgi blue screen Hollywood 'acting' we're so used to.

(Have you seen David Thewlis in Harry Potter? My God how talent can be wasted!)
