Strictly for fun...

Postby vicster111 » 14 Nov 2010

I'm gonna start this fun stuff with :

Various references to autos/driving/coming/going/delivering/drivers/auto parts/directions:
-Limo tag reads '2GAT123' (and backwards, reads '321TAG2'). It contains a 1, 2, 3.
-What are you doing? We don't stop here.
-Get out of the car
-drag race
-car accident
-The boys found this on the floor in back of the caddy.
-Could be someone's missing maybe.
-I just wanted to come here.
-Go ahead.
-It's the second one I've had, but they're both the same.
-But it looks just like this. Except for the light.
-There's a man in back of this place.
-I can see him through the wall. I can see his face.
-So you came to see if it's out there.
-Right, then. C'mon.
-It's around here.
-The girl is still missing.
-Where to?
-1612 Havenhurst.
-Wait here and I'll go get the key.
-I can hardly wait.
-Well, you and your aunt probably have an understanding, so here's the key.
-Betty has a key
-This is the girl.
-Hold on, Adam.
-That girl is not in my film.
-Did the Castigliane brothers get out of that limo?
-Keep that door open.
-Adam beats a limo
-'Joe's Parking' sign
-Shut everything down.
*beep* car accident.
-We hear an alarm that sounds a lot like a car alarm
-I'm gonna study those lines until I know them inside and out.
-I got a real shock to find your friend Rita here. She was in the shower and I opened the door.
-She was in an accident.
-Coco unlocked the door.
-Open it.
-Rita has a key
-Any new girls on the street lately?
-Maybe a little beat up?
-Parking sign at Pink's
-Laney gets into Joe's van
-Joe's van has a "D" on it
-They fired every one.
-You've gotta fix this.
-Please come to the office.
-I'm going home.
-I wonder where you were going?
-Mulholland Drive. That's where I was going.
-I want to walk around any way. I'm in Hollywood and I haven't even seen any of it.
-Stop it.
-Throw him out. Get out.
-Let's hide it. (Betty and Rita shake hands)
-There's one.
-the 1, 2, 3 on the payphone
-I heard a sound last night that sorta sounded like a car crash...
-Would you like your check?
-We'll take our check.
-It's the only one.
-Get out. Get out of here. He's never coming back.
-Here's the door.
-Get out.
-shot of Park Hotel
-Right.
-They told me you were as good as broke.
-You're broke.
-So where do I meet this Cowboy? Do I have to ride out to the range?
-If I tell him the meeting's on you have to go to the top of Beechwood Canyon and there's a corral up there where he'll be.
-Okay, but you don't know what you're missing.
-We'll go over there and we'll find out.
-I want you to get her out. I want you to get her out now.
-Betty's a young actress and I was just delivering some faxed pages of a scene for her big audition tomorrow.
-Now come along Louise and I'll take you home.
-C'mon, Louise, I'm taking you home.
-Woa!
-Well, stop for a little second and think about it.
-There's sometimes a buggy.
-How many drivers does a buggy have?
-So let's just say that I'm driving this buggy and if you fix your attitude you can ride along with me.
-Now, when I get back I'll keep the cab waiting, so be ready.
-I'm going to take her over there.
-We'll walk Betty out.
-We just get a little catty sometimes.
-Now we want to take you across and introduce you to a diector who's a head above the rest.
-Knock right out of the park.
-Linney, Betty and Nikki enter elevator car "A"
-Checking the gate.
-Let's lock it up please.
-Roll sound please.
-Get Jason over here.
-Don't stop.
-Those two men in front, in the car.
-Keep going. Go around to the back.
-C'mon help me in.
-C'mon. I'll open the front door.
-C'mon. Just get in and get a good night's sleep.
-Go with me somewhere.
-Right now.
-Rita hails a cab.
-There is no band.
-It's all a tape recording.
-Rita uses a key
-Diane has a key
-My lamp and dishes.
-I put your dishes in that box.
-That's my ashtray.
-the 1, 2, 3 on the coffee carafe
-You've come back.
-You drive me wild.
-Stop it. Diane stop.
-Kill the lights.
-the sound at the beginning of the convertible scene (sounds like a garage door opening)
-the car has an "A"
-A repair sign in the scene
-The car is waiting.
-You coming?
-Go on. The car is right outside your house. It's been waiting.
-It's 6980 Mulholland Drive.
-What are you doing? We don't stop here.
-C'mon sweetheart.
-Ah, perfect timing.
-I'm sorry I was late.
-So you rolled in here from Canada.
-I've always wanted to come here.
-I wanted to buy that judge a Rolls Royce.
-This is the girl.
-Got the money?
-Once you hand that over to me it's a done deal.
-Joe has a key
-We see a blue book (Kelley's Blue Book - used by consumers)
-We see a black book (Kelley's Black Book - used by auto dealers/wholesalers)

The girl is still missing
The engine is missing

All the knocking we here in the film...is this an engine knocking?

An anagram for Betty Elms is 'Set my belt'.

Ah, perfect timing.
Timing belt

Once you hand that over to me it's a done deal.
The sale of a car? Deals also happen on a handshake.

the 1, 2, 3 on the payphone
1st, 2nd and 3rd gear

Joe's van has a "D" on it
"D" for Drive

Those two men in front, in the car
Kinda sounds like reference to two dudes in the front of a limo.

There is no band. It's all a tape recording.
You're listening to a cassette in the cassette player, not the radio.

I wanted to buy that judge a Rolls Royce.
...for picking me as the winner...Best in Show.

C'mon sweetheart
Something you might say to your car if it won't start.

The reason we hear a garage door opening and see a repair sign? The car is at the shop for repair. In order to set the timing belt, the lights need to be 'killed'.

Does Diane own a 'volks'(volts) 'wagon'(buggy) 'bug'(jitterbug)?

6980 Mulholland Drive
Sounds like an address is being provided to a driver.

Lol!

More fun stuff:

"What are you doing? We don't stop here."
"I'm sorry. I have to go. I promised a friend."
"Betty? Betty? Where are you? Betty?"
************************
"If that dang dog craps in the courtyard one more time I'm just gonna bake his little butt for breakfast."
"Well, let's eat. I'm starving!"
************************
"There was an accident. I came here."
"I understand. I saw the dress."
"Can I offer you gentlemen anything?"
"Ray, take care of this."
"Napkin."
---
"An accident like that...who could've foreseen that?"
"Unbelievable!"
************************
"It'll be just like in the movies. We'll pretend to be someone else."
"Let me do it."
"You look like someone else."
************************
"There's...something...there."
"There's nothing?"
"Not that I can see."
************************
"It's strange to be calling yourself."
"Maybe it's not me"
"Hello. It's me. Leave a message."
"Diane?"
[cradle is picked up]
"What is it Cookie?"
************************
"Hi there. Who are you?"
"Um, Betty."
"Um Betty, can I see you outside for a moment?"
************************
"Now I'm gonna trust you to sort this thing out. Don't make me out to be a sucker."
"Hank, can you clear the set? Let's get this worked out."
"Can Diane stay?"
"Yeah. Sure. Whatever you say. But if there's trouble in there, get rid of it."
"It'll be my pleasure. Now, get out of here."
************************
"I want to walk around any way. I'm in Hollywood and I haven't even seen any of it."
"Just forget you ever saw it. It's better that way."
************************
"So you came to see if it's out there."
"To get rid of this god-awful feeling."
"It's around here."
"It's down at the end on the left. But she hasn't been around for a few days."
"I'll go with you."
************************
"Have you ever done this before?"
"I don't know."
"Are you sure you want this?"
"More than anything in this world."
************************
"You don't have any pets, do you?"
"Oh no, I don't."
"Well, no hard feelings if you don't."
************************
"I pay you cash, Cookie. I've got enough cash for you, Cookie."
"Really?"
"You know what I want. It's not that difficult."
"Get out. Get out of here before I kill you!"
"But you're really good!"
************************
"Something bit me bad! There's... something... there."
"Sometimes there's a buggy. Just pretend you didn't see it. It's better that way."
************************
"She's hurt real bad!"
"You gotta call the hospital. I'm serious about this!"
"I don't think we have to do that. Please don't worry."
************************
And from dk23:
"Now I want you to think, can you try that for me? "
"Ok Aunt Ruth, I'll try."

Two items that we see in both 'parts' of the film:

-A black book
-A blue key

black & blue
--"Seen any new girls lately? Maybe a little beat up?"

book & key
--Bookie

Until I saw all the characters listed there I never realised quite how many we have. Very much like the Twin Peaks pilot that introduced characters at a dizzying rate. Thanks for that.

Also, just a note on this:

I love that you said Laura's limo driver there, since it's possible that Laura's character before the crash and subsequent amnesia could perhaps argued to be a third character played by Miss Harring who is never properly named in the film.

To be fair, afaik, the ending credits list all actors with speaking roles including identifying those actors with multiple roles. More specifically here ... Lynch credits Laura as Rita before the Limo driver's line (as her line comes first). So, he's not getting cute he's telling you (for our purposes) that she is Rita. I don't know what more he could do ...

Indeed that's what the credits say.

But in that case does Rita remember that her name is Rita because she sees the Gilda poster, or does she (as generally assumed) take her name from the poster because she doesn't know her name? If she doesn't know her name then how is she Rita before she sees the poster? If the mystery that the girls are trying to uncover is Rita's identity, then why don't they go through the phone book looking for all the Ritas? Not really a massive deal, but the hard-nosed girl assertively saying "we don't stop here" with a scowl isn't much like the the girl that we see being led around by Betty in the rest of the 'dream' section (or whatever you want to call it).

She's a dream avatar and is nominally named Rita, I get that, and as I say, not really a big deal, just a thought I've had in the past.

I guess I didn't make my point clearly. What I'm reacting to is your comment that perhaps Laura is playing a third character. It's not that I believe her real name is Rita (I don't). But she is the same character, lying about her name. So, the character count is still at two.

"She has pretty red hair."
"She's letting me stay here. Now, I'm in this dream place."
---
"Can Diane stay?"
"Sure. Whatever you say."

"You could stay at my place, if you want."
"No. I don't think it's a good idea. I'll find a place to stay."

An anagram for Diane Selwyn: Linney was Ed
An anagram for LJ DeRosa: Or LJ as Ed
An anagram for Castigliane: Casting a lie

All of the people above (Linney James, Ed and the Castigliane brothers) were casting agents of some sort.

I hope this qualifies for fun. I just saw this quote written down the side of a theatre, above a pub. The name caught my eye first and the quote seems apt for David Lynch.

"So we can truthfully say that true art is what does not seem to be art; and the most important thing is to suppress the artistry, because if it is revealed this discredits a man completely and ruins his reputation."

Baldassare Castiglione, Il libro del cortegiano (1528), lib i, sec xxvi (S.H. transl.)

This is what happens whenever I get struck by Mulhollanditis - signs and symbols cropping up out of the blue!

Mulholland Drive is a long and winding road.
'A Long and Winding Road' is a Beatles song.
John Lennon, of The Beatles, was killed by an obsessive fan who grew to hate him.
