College work about Mulholland Drive

Postby TheCrazy » 15 Dec 2011

Hello everyone, first of all it's important to say that Mulholland Drive is one of my favourite films of all time (if not THE favourite) and I'm also a big fan of David Lynch work.

I'm from Portugal and I'm currently studying filmmaking, and for the Production Strategies subject I'll be doing a work about the production of, at least, 3 films, and of course I had to select this one!
I'll have to describe the film as well as its production and distribution
I'll also have to study the trailers, posters and promotional stuff as well as the target audience, and how it worked.

I'd like to know if you could refere some reliable sources that I can use to know details about the production strategies of this movie, including the distribution and everything that is related to these two things.
Links on Internet, eventually books, articles, anything you know will be usefull :) I've already started searching but I really want to gather all the information I can, so I can have a deep perspective about the production of this (great) movie.

Hope that I made myself clear enough :)
Thank you for your help!

Hello and welcome. ;-)

Firstly, I think I should say that you've chosen a very interesting film in terms of the its development and production. You may be aware, but MD started out life as a TV pilot film funded by ABC but later rejected by them. It lay dormant for 12 months or more before Lynch got the funding from Studio Canal to complete the former pilot film into a feature film.

Have a google around the Mulholland Dr. pilot and read up on all that stuff. Check out some interviews with David on Youtube and see what you can dig out.

From what I remember the book Weirdsville USA was published after the pilot was cancelled but before the funding for the feature film was secured, so that will be a good place to start to get some info about how and why MD the TV show came to be cancelled.

I'll pull a couple of books off the shelf when I have some time and see what else might be useful. Grateful for contributions from others in the meantime.

This is the Weirdsville book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Weirdsville-USA ... 0859652912

Hey there, I've just finished the whole work. Gave me over 31 pages about Mulholland Drive! Now I'm expecting to have a good grade on that! Thanks for your help, for these past weeks, Mulholland drive.net became my company hehe

I'd like to share the work with you, however it's written in portuguese, anyway if you're interested in reading it, let me know ;)

Again, thank you for your help.
