Quiz

Postby Xav » 13 Jun 2012

Einstein wrote an intelligence quiz somewhere in the previous century. The solution has been widely spread over the world wide web.
Einstein's quiz

Now, I thought it would be a nice challenge to write something similar to praise the mind-bending puzzle of David Lynch's Mulholland Dr.

So, here is the Mulholland Dr Quiz

have fun ...

I need to find a couple of *quiet* work hours to have a bash at this.

Thanks for sharing Xav.

I might see about Bob adding an "update" link to the homepage to this thread.

Fun stuff. But if we're putting it on the website, it should go in the fun section with a disclaimer. I would hate for someone to surf in and see the question ... 'Who is the dead woman' and get their hopes up that it leads to a MD solution rather than MD themed slant on a Einstein puzzle solution.

For discussion purposes, here is the quiz:

Xaverius wrote this quiz in june of the year 2012. He thinks that 99.8% of the people in the world cannot solve the quiz.

At Sierra Bonita's there are 5 different apartments, each identified by a different flower.
Each apartment belongs to a girl with a different name, and each girl has a different hair color.
These 5 girls show a certain type of 'activity', and own a unique object.
No girls have the same name, have the same object, show the same activity, or have the same hair color.

Here's the question: What is the name of the dead girl?

Anaya's neighbor owns the Rose-apartment.
The girl that's awake has a neighbor with the piano-ashtray.
D Selwyn's blue key lies on the coffee-table.
A Gonzalez' neighbor owns the Daffodil-apartment.
The blonde and the dirty blonde are neighbors.
LJ DeRosa has the brown mug.
The dirty blonde owns the Lily-apartment.
The girl right in the middle apartment has black hair.
A Gonzalez' neighbor has the red lampshade.
The brunette has two neighbors.
LJ DeRosa's neighbor is hallucinating.
J Miller owns the Dahlia-apartment.
The red is dreaming.
The girl with the pearl earring is snoozing.
The Bird of Paradise-apartment is next to the Lily-apartment.
Both D Selwyn and J Miller have two neighbors.

Below is discussion of the quiz, so I'll use spoiler tags:

Maybe there is no answer!... Maybe it's just a lot of cut up bits originally intended for a TV gameshow?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I am so sorry for the confusion, which seems to have been caused by the picture of the 'real movie's apartment-list. So, guess what? I photoshopped the picture and got rid of all the neighbors and their apartments, that do not exist in the riddle.

"Sorry, about that."

O, btw, I have received one correct solution. So, it is doable, hah!

Sorry about that in quotes ... exactly who are you quoting?

So, guess what? Why not kill the picture altogether as it is completely and utterly useless. The whole point is to simply use the clues/conditions to figure out the order of the apartments, yet your picture still implies an order that is completely unwarranted and unhelpful. That's why Einstein didn't have a picture, Einstein.

The good news is that, using only the conditions/clues, the quiz is completely solvable and fun.

Xaverius wrote this quiz in June of the year 2012. He thinks that 99.8% of the people in the world cannot solve the quiz.

ctyankee revised Xaverius' quiz for clarity. He thinks that many people can bop out the correct solution on a simple spreadsheet.

Overview:

This has nothing to do with the film Mulholland Dr. per se other than borrowing the name of an apartment complex, the names of five of the apartment tenants and some film props. Therefore, assume the order of the apartments (in relationship to each other) has nothing to do with anything except this quiz.

At Sierra Bonita Apartments, there are exactly 5 apartments, each named after a different flower.
Each apartment belongs to a different girl, each with a unique hair color, owned object and physical condition. One of those physical conditions is: dead.

Objective:

Determine the Name of the Dead Girl

Clues/Conditions:

1. Anaya's neighbor owns the Rose-apartment.
2. The girl that's awake has a neighbor with the piano-ashtray.
3. D Selwyn's has a blue key.
4. A Gonzalez' neighbor owns the Daffodil-apartment.
5. The blonde and the dirty blonde are neighbors.
6. LJ DeRosa has the brown mug.
7. The dirty blonde owns the Lily-apartment.
8. The girl right in the middle apartment has black hair.
9. A Gonzalez' neighbor has the red lampshade.
10. The brunette has two neighbors.
11. LJ DeRosa's neighbor is hallucinating.
12. J Miller owns the Dahlia-apartment.
13. The redhead is dreaming.
14. The girl with the pearl earring is snoozing.
15. The Bird of Paradise-apartment is next to the Lily-apartment.
16. Both D Selwyn and J Miller have two neighbors.

Using all of these 16 clues/conditions, there is one and only one possible solution.

If you want confirmation of your answer, send a detailed message to Xaverius.

However, if you simply place Tenant Name, Apartment Flower, Object, Hair Color and Activity into a spreadsheet and double-check all clues/conditions, you can confirm the solution for yourself rather easily.

Tbh I thought that the rules of the puzzle were quite plain first time around. Don't see the need to be so patronising.

The only buggy I'm gettin in is the one driven by David Lynch himself.

Put the cards on the table, Xav, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on this stuff. For now it just looks like MD Sudoku. And that is not, typically, how I look at art.
