Wedding band rings

Postby Enrico » 30 Dec 2011

This may be a futile quest for meaning, but wedding bands are a recurring part of the film and it must mean something. The characters sporting a wedding band or ring on their right hand ring finger are:
Aunt Ruth, both waitresses played by Melissa Crider, and Diane after she wakes up.

What are the possibilities? Actual marriage, Waitress trick (don't hit on me), lesbian committment ring, Nuns committment/wedding ring to God.

Why the rignt hand? Married women who are lefties. Some european countries use the right hand, some the left. Some nuns use the right hand (sisterhood orders more connected to europe), some the left.

Who's right or left handed? Aunt Ruth and Mellisa Crider's characters are always right handed. Naomi Watt's characters are mostly right handed but not always. Naomi's left handed actions are: Using the pay phone to call the PD; opening the shower door with Rita inside (maybe not a real lefty move); Answering the touch tone phone next to the red lampshade; and drinking from the SOS coffee cup at the dinner party. Maybe Betty or Diane switching handedness is significant by itself.

This may sound unrelated, but if you step frame-by-frame through the open drawer shot just before Diane shoots herself you see the following:

A rosary on top of a little blue book, or blue something. There is only about one frame where the crucifix can be seen clearly. The rosary beads are quite large. Priests or nuns frequently had rosaries with much larger beads. Also the drawer contains an alarm clock tucked away in disuse, a fancy pen in an open box, a square white box that looks like a jewelry ring box except it seems to be twice the proper size, and maybe a white handkerchief.

The pen is apparently the one that waitress Diane boosts from a Winkie's customer. There is still a brief shot of the pen in the theatrical release of the film in the scenes after the pay phone call.

So we have a rosary on top of a mini-bible perhaps? Was Diane a nun or almost became a nun? If you think there are many veiled references to prostitution in the film, this may explain why Diane's perceptions have veiled them.

Another conundrum: I always thought that Diane worked along side Melissa Crider as a waitress for awhile. But two right handed waitress pals with wedding bands on their right hands? Really? If instead, Crider is always a representation of Diane, isn't it weird that the two are side-by-side near the end?
Sometimes you could hear the whisperings of all the great people who had lived here.

I don't have much comment to make, or any answers to your questions, but keep digging dude. These are some interesting (and new) details that are worth documenting.

The pen connection is interesting.
