The aural narrative, sound clues

Postby Erskine » 07 Mar 2012

I know this topic has been investigated before however I had some trouble locating a specific thread so I thought I would start here.

My first time watching Mulholland Dr. was in my home on a not so great television and even worse sound. Sadly that condition has not changed. I have begun to watch it on my laptop using the 3D sound effects and headphones. Because I am going through the film very slowly I have yet to fully catalogue the aural clues that stand out.

We know we have the "breathing" at the start of the film, that same breathing his heard again behind the sounds and dialogue that takes place in the film. I have made it up to the point where Adam smashes the windshield of The Castigliane brothers limo and proceeds to drive away, there is a distinct unmistakable knocking of a door. I'm not stating nothing new here but has anyone yet constructed a chronology based on the sounds? Certain sounds stand out to me just from my original viewing in which I less than optimum sound and I wasn't focusing so much on the sound clues to begin with. When the old couple is chasing our Diane down the hallway there is a scream behind the scream. The scream is different than what we see and hear is Dianes and is more horrified in quality. That some of these sounds are synchronized has to be of great importance.

I'm not aware that anyone has done a full-film chronology of audio sound/effects of the film, so your effort would stand apart.

Agreed.

We know that Lynch pretty much believes that the sound and vision are equally important, so if he's hiding clues in what he shows us, lord only knows what is hidden in what he invites us to hear. Could be a whole other world there.
