The first waitress Diane as seen after the pay phone scene in Winkies with Betty and Rita sitting in the booth does two interesting things. First, it is Betty who is sitting in the same position at the table as Dan, and Joe. In Dan's scene no waitress interacts with them at the table. In the scene with Betty and Rita, the waitress named Diane glances at Betty with an unmistakable knowing look in her eyes. It is deliberate as the camera focuses on this. The glance itself is considerable as her expression changes subtely along with it. Further, she places the check on the table for which the camera focuses on this, however it is not the check that is of particular note but her fingers. Which are two fingers placed down, red nail polish, she does appear to have a pen in her hand or another object so this may explain the position of her fingers but it does seem deliberate. The waitress Betty as we see in a scene depicting Joe sitting where Dan and Betty had sat, with a Diane sitting where a Rita and Herb had sat, also makes a very similar glance at Joe as waitress Diane had done when Betty was sitting in the same position at the table.
The camera also follows waitress Diane briefly after she places the check down. Presently I cannot recall waitress Betty's movements as I have been studying the film slowly at this point. I will inspect both scenes more closely. I am fully aware of the significance of the names and associations but I am wondering if there isn't more to the waitresses at this point, outside of the theories already presented.
Let's take a closer look at this together.
