A Significant Perspective of the 2000s

Postby danieltx » 28 Nov 2010

This is a quote from the Mulholland Drive page on Wikipedia:

"The film...has been chosen by many critics as representing a significant perspective of the 2000s."

I've done some searching but I can't find any specific critics who made that statement, nor can I find any elaboration on the topic, so I figure it deserves a place on here. What are your thoughts on this statement? What exactly do you believe this perspective is? How does it speak to the decade of the 2000s?

My thoughts are that if the statement is unsubstantiated/unreferenced it should be removed as a comment from the Wiki site. Someone would have to make the case for me to be able to react to it but (on the surface of things) it does not resonate with me.

Perhaps it's a badly worded note to the fact that the film appeared in the top 5 or 10 of a whole load of "Film of the Decade" type lists. Otherwise I also don't see how it specifically reflects much from the 2000s. It's hardly a zeitgeist film in the vein of maybe Easy Rider or Slacker or Wall Street from previous decades.

Interesting - when I first read that statement, I definitely agreed with it. I'm a bit under the weather right now so I won't try and go into it, as I want to make sure I clearly articulate why I believe it to be true. I'll post my thoughts up one night this week.
